About Us

For more than a century, the Lauing Family has ranched in Central South Dakota continuing to build our program, preserving the usability and accomplishments of Blue Valentine/Joe Hanock foundation through offspring. Foals go on to strengthen other breeding programs, to be used as working ranch horses, for personal saddle horses, and mounting competitors from youth to the PRCA across the country. Our horses that are smooth moving across big country and quick on their feet in the arena, with color, conformation and size, muscle, the right amount of bone to perform and stay sound. Lauing-bred horses do well anywhere.

Our stallions and mares are AQHA N/N on the 5panel genetic test, maintaining the integrity of the Blue Valentine legacy. The foundation of our breeding traces directly to influential stallions such as Bonny Blues, Blue Fox Hancock, and Hancocks Red Fox, with pedigrees stacked with names like Roan Ambrose, Leo Hancock Hayes, and Fox Coup. Each of these sires is a grandson of Plenty Try and Blue Valentine, carrying 43.75% Blue Valentine blood. Lauing Ranch continues to strengthen this heritage with a powerful lineup of young stallions adding bone, color, and classic Hancock substance, several stamping foals with size, shape, and that signature roan. Proven genetics that are unmistakingly Blue Valentine.

As AQHA Lifetime Members with more than 40 years of dedicated breeding, Lauing Ranch is proudly recognized as AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders, producing horses that consistently qualify for the world. Every foal is eligible for the AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge—an endorsement of generations spent building sound, versatile, ranchready horses backed by proven bloodlines. Lauing Ranch was honored as the South Dakota Quarter Horse Association 2021 Producer of the Year, and JD Lauing currently serves on the SDQHA Board of Directors. The next generation—Levi Lauing—continues the tradition, working closely alongside his granddad and uncle to carry forward the program’s legacy.

The best way to truly appreciate what Lauing Ranch has to offer is to come see the horses for yourself. Visitors are always welcome. We love showing our program, feel fortunate to do what we love every day, and value the connections we’ve built over the years with buyers who have become friends. To all who have purchased horses from us—thank you. Your support means everything. We’re excited to present another outstanding group of weanlings again this year.
